Announcing the Retirement of the Read and Understood Add-in App and the New Enterprise App
Microsoft announced in November 2023 the end-of-life for the SharePoint online Add-In model.
If you are still accessing the app from site contents, you are required to upgrade from ‘Read and Understood for SharePoint’ to ‘Read and Understood for SharePoint Online and Teams’ from Microsoft AppSource before 1st May 2025.
What changes when you upgrade
In principle nothing much, as the App will be authenticating to your SharePoint Tenant and Microsoft Entra ID using modern interfaces. The App functions exactly as it does now but with the following minor changes in use:
Acknowledging documents from email
Users are required to be logged on to 365, if not, then a Microsoft login popup will be presented before the App acknowledgement page is displayed.
Accessing the App for configuration and reporting
The new App is a full-page SharePoint App with access secured via the Pages library permissions.
Add-In model-based Apps were always available to all users via Site Contents.
App Registration
App registrations in Microsoft Entra ID are no longer required and hence, there are no secrets requiring periodic renewal.
Note: existing App Registrations can be deleted once the App has been replaced.
Selecting addressees in Document Selectors
Due to technical limitations SharePoint groups are now defined separately to users and Microsoft Entra ID Security and 365 groups in Documents Selectors:
(1) Users and Microsoft Entra Id Security and 365groups
2) SharePoint Groups
Azure region selection
New installations only: users can select the Azure region the App data will reside. This is a tenant level decision and once set cannot be changed, without our assistance.
Site wide reporting
This only affects customers that use the reporting URLsoutside the App.
The value for query string parameter ?code= has change to the Object ID of the EnterpriseApplication ‘Read and Understood - Modern SharePoint Application Principal’ inMicrosoft Entra ID for your tenant ( domain). For example:
Note: The application id will be as shown above as it is globally unique
We recommend you open the Read and Understood App, and from the navigation click Site Administration. At the bottom of the page under Compliance Reports, you can copy the links for the two reports.
Installing Read and Understood for SharePoint online and Team
Please follow the instructions on our website here and watch the video published on YouTube here.
IMPORTANT There is no need to re-configure the App as it will use your existing configuration.
Once the upgrade is successful, we strongly recommend that you remove the Read and Understood Add-In from Site Contents as it will stop working on the dates listed above.
